Anti-cancer immunotherapy drugs can overestimate the immune system, causing fatal autoimmune problems

Two patients treated for skin cancer each took their first dose of Opdivo and Yervoy and died of heart failure two weeks later. Dr. Javid Moslehi, director of a clinic at Vanderbilt University who specializes in treating heart cancer risks, said: “My feeling is that this is a class effect, not just a drug. ”

Drugs are called control point inhibitors, and other examples include Tecentriq Genentech, which is used for bladder cancer, and Keytruda from Merck & Co., which is used to treat melanoma.

These drugs help the immune system recognize and attack tumors aggressively. In some cases, however, the immune system attacks the tumor as well as the heart muscle. This autoimmune reaction causes inflammation abnormalities and problematic heart rhythms. If doctors or patients quickly point to inflammation, other drugs may be used to suppress the overestimated immune response. However, sometimes the damage is too serious to reverse, causing damage to the mortal heart.

In fact, by April 2016, 18 cases of severe heart inflammation were reported in 20,594 patients receiving such treatment. Heart damage was more frequent when a combination of drugs was used. Pharmaceutical companies say these drugs are most effective when used together, but doctors say it is a “double-edged sword.” When used in combination, the drugs stimulate the immune system and cause the heart attack of the body.

Many doctors believe that the benefits of these drugs outweigh the risks and that the autoimmune reaction can be handled with other medications.
